Mathematics Education Research, Educational Policy, and Transformation
of Instructional Practice: Possibilities, Challenges, and Priorities
A discussion of current national directions in research about the teaching and learning of mathematics and their intersection with trends in educational policy and calls for the transformation of educational practice. Is it possible to maintain momentum in building programmatic mathematics education research that will build theory and accumulate
while at the same time addressing issues of educational policy and pressure for the transformation of practice in mathematics teaching and learning at all levels? What is the role of federal funding agencies in this landscape, and how can the programs of the National Science Foundation's Division of Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings continue to promote innovative research and development to improve mathematics education while also advancing policy directions and transformation? These issues will be explored in the current context
for STEM education improvement.
